Steamship cruising past pine islands on Lake Muskoka

Things To Do in Muskoka

Cruises, trails, beaches, waterfalls, and a winter most visitors never see.

Start With the Water

Muskoka's signature move is a boat cruise. Gravenhurst is home to North America's oldest operating steamship, and the S.S. Bigwin runs Lake of Bays with a captain's commentary full of local legends.

A two-hour cruise shows you more of Muskoka than two days of driving. The shoreline, the islands, and the famous boathouses only make sense from the water.

Prefer to drive the boat yourself? Our boating and paddling guide covers rentals, routes, and paddling for beginners.

Trails, Lookouts, and Waterfalls

The region has more than 100 hiking trails. Huckleberry Rock's pink granite lookout over Lake Muskoka takes about an hour. Hardy Lake's 8 km loop mixes forest and open Shield rock with swimming spots along the way.

Bracebridge alone has a chain of waterfalls, including High Falls, Wilson's Falls, and Bracebridge Falls, all free to visit and linked by the Trans Canada Trail.

Full trail details, difficulty ratings, and parking notes are in hiking and trails.

Beaches, Golf, and Family Attractions

Sandy public beaches like Gull Lake Park in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge Bay make easy free afternoons; see beaches and swimming. Golfers get some of Canada's top-ranked courses; see golf getaways.

With kids, add Santa's Village in Bracebridge, treetop trekking in Huntsville, and the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau, where rescued bears, foxes, and moose live out their rehab.

Book big-ticket family attractions for your first full day, when energy is highest and weather plans can still flex.

Culture, Cranberries, and Craft Beer

Muskoka has a real arts scene: the Huntsville Festival of the Arts stages 30-plus events each summer, and studio tours run region-wide. The Muskoka Discovery Centre in Gravenhurst tells the steamship and boat-building story.

Taste your way through Muskoka Brewery, Sawdust City Brewing, and Clear Lake Brewing at the Muskoka Beer Spa. In Bala, Johnston's Cranberry Marsh pairs a working farm with the Muskoka Lakes Winery.

Check dates against events and festivals so you land on a festival weekend on purpose, not by accident.

Do Not Sleep on Winter

Arrowhead Provincial Park's 1.3 km forest skating trail, lit by torches at night, is one of Ontario's best winter experiences. The Muskoka Lakes Winery adds a 1.2 km ice trail around frozen cranberry bogs.

Add dog sledding near Huntsville, downhill runs at Hidden Valley, and 25 km of free groomed cross-country trails at Limberlost. Our winter getaways page has the full season plan.
