Fishing Resorts in Muskoka

Trophy water hiding in plain sight, and the lodges that put you on it.

The Best-Kept Open Secret in Ontario

Many anglers assume the celebrity lakes are all show and no fish. Wrong. Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau, and Joseph hold trophy-class lake trout, walleye, and northern pike, and the bass fishing ranks with the best in Ontario.

Anglers on Lake Muskoka have iced walleye over 10 pounds. Smallmouth stack up on rocky points all summer, and largemouth remain the region's most underrated fish.

Beyond the big three, hundreds of smaller lakes, plus Lake of Bays, Skeleton Lake, Kawagama, and Georgian Bay, spread the pressure thin.

What Bites When

Lake trout run shallow right after ice-out in late April, then hold 40 to 100 feet deep from May to the end of September. Walleye open the third Saturday in May and feed steadily into fall; a jig tipped with a minnow is the local standard.

Bass season opens the fourth Saturday in June and runs to November 30, with the heaviest smallmouth caught in October and November. Pike start in shallow weedy bays in spring and slide to 15 to 25 foot rock reefs by mid-June.

Match the trip to the season and you can catch four species in a single long weekend.

Where Anglers Stay

Look for resorts with a real marina, cleaning station, and boats to rent. Cottage resorts on quieter lakes, classic lodges on Lake Rosseau, and Gravenhurst-area properties near the Hoc-Roc River and Muskoka River mouths all work well.

Taboo Muskoka publishes its own top-five list of nearby spots, including Bear Bay and Treasure Island, both short runs from the dock.

Pair your stay with our boating and paddling guide for rental options, and check pet-friendly resorts if the dog rides in the boat too.

Charters, Licences, and Costs

Guided trips run about $550 for two anglers for five hours, with tackle and boat included. Rates rise around $100 per extra person or hour. Book morning slots in summer, when surface water is cool and calm.

Everyone 18 to 64 needs an Ontario fishing licence, sold at marinas and tackle shops across the region. Check current Zone 15 regulations, because seasons and limits differ by species and lake.

A one-day charter early in the trip pays for itself: you learn the patterns, then repeat them on your own for the rest of the week.
